It sounds pretty simple, but many have been able to complicate the term self improvement by saying, “What is the self really but perception?” If we used this as a definition, it would turn out to be nothing more than improving how we perceive ourselves. Why is this so important? Think about this – how well do you think you would do in life if you perceived yourself not worthy of being a success? The answer should be obvious. Looking at the dictionary, it defines self improvement in this way: improvement of one’s mind, character, etc., through one’s own efforts.
I have a question for you. To be successful in life, or in anything for that matter, how important is it to improve your mind and character? If we think ourselves incapable of something, what are the chances of achieving it? On the other hand, if we believe ourselves capable of achieving something, how does this change our chances compared to thinking ourselves incapable?
Self improvement is the means of gradually creating the mindset and skills to improve not only yourself, but your entire surroundings. Think about the person who is employed at a job and is comfortable earning an average wage. Although this person is entitled to this, he may notice that others have created a better life. How “lucky” he thinks they are. They must have had rich parents or come into money. Although in some cases, this is true, most of the time it’s not.
This is a question I asked myself when I was younger. Why are some people better off than others? What has driven their success? I found out, that what caused many people to succeed, is they have learned or improved themselves to take action on what causes success. This is the value of self improvement to me. It is an opportunity to learn to act in a way that can cause you to succeed in every aspect of your life. I used to think that people we born successful or that it was a talent that only some people had. I later found out that it didn’t matter how much money, intelligence, power, influence or any other successful trait that someone had that made them successful. It was those who figured out exactly what they wanted and took action to actualize it. We can have all the money in the world and not be happy. Self improvement is needed to integrated and actualize what truly makes us happy in life. It has been said that happiness is the progressive realization of goals. If you think about the opposite then, unhappiness comes from not getting what you want. I believe this is true. To create a happy, balanced and successful life, self improvement is necessary.
