Self Improvement Articles: Understanding the Effect of Human Values

self improvement valuesI wanted to give you some insight on human values. What are vaules? For this conversation, I will be referring to values as the physical and mental states, or in general, the feelings that we want to have or avoid most.

For example, we don’t value family for the sake of having family, but the feelings a family gives us. If being with your family gives you the feelings of certainty, love and importance, especially if they are high on you list of feelings you want to have to feel fulfilled in life, then those values will be ones that you would want most. If being with your family is mostly painful, but you still need to fulfill your needs for certainty, love and improtance, then you will seek out the means to attain those feelings elsewhere – like your friends or even your job!

For example, these are the top 3 values I want the most:

1) To feel loved
2) To feel happy
3) Freedom

These are the 3 vaules I want to avoid the most:

1) Hate
2) Worry
3) Frustration

Take Action!

Make a list of your top 10 values in both areas and analyze them. Being clear about what you value the most and least, is useful because it helps identify part of why you do what you do and feel how you feel. It can help you gain control of your behaviors.
